Tulsa Getting the Bicycling Spirit!
According to the League of American Bicyclists, Tulsa is a ‘Bike Friendly” city. The recent designation makes Tulsa the first city in Oklahoma to receive such a distinction.
I suppose there are some who would disagree, but the situation has definitely changed in the last 20+ years.
The Creek Turnpike has added bike trails that stretch all the way around the city and connect to the KATY trail that heads up to Sand Springs. Riverparks has completed the bike trail on the west side the Arkansas river to the 71st street bridge crossover creating a loop from 11th St. to 71st St with spurs heading south to Jenks.
There are lots of trails and bikeways already in the city, with many more planned 1
The League of American Bicyclists rates cities and states in our nation as to their friendliness toward bicycles. 2
The organization scores on the basis of how well a city:
- promotes cycling through legislation, policies and programs
- creates new places to ride
- educates motorists and cyclists
- encourages people to bike for transportation and recreation
The Spring 2009 ranking gives Tulsa a Bronze rating, the first city in the state to receive recognition.
