California Leads The Way

With many out of work, and most of us strapped for cash, this may be the only way many of us could ever afford to upgrade our homes.

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom signed legislation Monday that would allow homeowners to finance green upgrades to their homes through a city funded program. The green home grants would be paid for by increases in the property taxes for the home in question.

This method of funding is expanding nationwide and could create jobs as well as cut our use of fossil fuels.

With everybody holding tight to their wallets, this seems like a win, win situation. Homeowners get to upgrade their homes which they otherwise couldn’t afford. Jobs are created in cities across the country, not just on Wall Street or Flint, Michigan. The upgrades will pay for themselves in energy savings and reduce the strain on our creaking electricity grid. Cities that institute such a program can, rightfully, tout themselves as Green Cities. The tax burden will be paid by whoever owns the home, and can be paid for out of the energy savings.
